GWS Commemorative Letters

Michigan’s George Spasyk joined the professional staff of Lambda Chi Alpha after receiving his M.B.A. in 1950.  He stayed on the staff for forty years and was fond of saying he “never had a real job.”  Twenty-five years into that tenure, the staff organized an effort to have current and past members of the Fraternity’s Grand High Zeta (board of directors), Staff, Alumni Advisory Committee, and Student Advisory Committee send in letters congratulating George on his tenure.

Click here to view the letters.

There were 113 letters contributed to the project, including two from Sigma brothers.  They were Bill Schepers ’60, who served on the staff with George, and Bruce Koepfgen ’74, who was on the Student Advisory Committee.  There are also eleven from men who were or would go on to become Lambda Chi Alpha Grand High Alphas.  Those brothers are Tozier Brown, "Doc" Dirghalli, Ernst J.C. Fischer, Ken Gibb, Geoff Gunn, Bobby Ray Hicks, Houston Karnes, Clay Myers, Harold Myers, Russell Shetterly, and Marty Smith.  There's even one from George Van Feist, a past Grand Archon of Theta Kappa Nu, the fraternity that merged with Lambda Chi Alpha in 1939.

Mother’s Days in the 50s

On February 7, 2015, Σ 688 George Fomin ’56 wrote to us about two photos of Mother’s Days at Sigma in 1953 and ’54, but we didn’t get around to posting them until now.

From Brother Fomin:

For the brothers of Sigma,  Mother’s Day had a special sense of reverence and feeling that it was a rare occasion on which we could show our appreciation for our mothers.

The Sunday morning began with brothers dressing in their very best suits, attending church services and returning for a light lunch before noon. Then, some in the house and a few groups outside the house on the balmy spring Sundays, we waited for our mothers to arrive.

And, this is when we had an unexpected laugh one Mother’s Day. Major who was usually loafing around could sense the anticipation in the air, and he began romping around a few of us on the Hill Street sidewalk. He was romping in some muddy spots along the sidewalk and we wanted him to keep away from us, so we nuged him away. Well, that was play for Major and, unbelievably, in a couple of quick jumps he stood up on his hind legs and put his big muddy paws on the suit lapels of a two brothers. We remembered and laughed about that for many Mother’s Days.

Soon, our mothers began arriving, some arriving with our fathers, and the wonderful gathering began in the house. We pinned Mother’s Day corsages and enjoyed cake, coffee and tea throughout the house, which recalls another laugh.

We were proudly showing our mothers how clean and orderly our second floor study rooms were, and that brought us to something we weren’t sure about: the famous full-size poster of Marilyn Monroe in her birthday suit that we had on the ceiling of our room. We didn’t know if our faces would be turning red, but when our mothers laughed with great spirits we appreciated and loved our mothers even more.

Then it was time for all of us—mothers, fathers, family brothers and sisters—to gather on the front lawn for the highlight, the iconic Mother’s Day photographs that have kept those rare days in our memories all our lives.

George Spasyk

On May 16, 2019, Sigma lost a great brother, friend, mentor, and leader. As ΛΧΑ’s Executive Director from 1968 to 1990, George Spasyk touched the lives of tens of thousands of ΛΧs. Brother Spasyk continued to advise ΛΧΑ as an emeritus director long after his retirement (he would often joke that emeritus was Latin for “for free”), and he led the development of Sigma’s own alumni association in 2008.

We don’t think we can improve on ΛΧΑ Historian Michael Raymond’s excellent “Reflections on the Life of George W. Spasyk”, but here we share some photos to celebrate Brother Spasyk’s life.

Spring 1954 “Outer Space” House Party

On February 5, 2015, Σ 688 George Fomin ’56 wrote to us about a priceless photo of an “Outer Space” party at Sigma in 1954.

From Brother Fomin:

For the May ’54 house party, Sigma brothers decided that it would be fun to have an “Outer Space” theme. It was great fun to invite the young women and talk about the theme costumes that we would wear and then to prepare our costumes. The women prepared some of the most dramatic matching costumes and there was a fun competition for the most “far out” costumes.

The afternoon of the party we decorated the house with streamers and rolled up the rug in the living room for dancing. We danced to records of the big bands of the day and Jackie Gleason’s Music for Lovers Only.

We were having the greatest time of our lives in the chapter house and we wanted it to go on forever, but at about 12:30am, our very good-hearted faculty house advisor and his wife appeared with big smiles and we knew “the ball was over” … until the next great house party.
